How to Spot a Fake Libertad

Counterfeit 1 oz Silver Mexican Libertad coins are increasingly common. Use the acoustic verifier above as your first line of defense, then check these key red flags:

  • 🚨Incorrect weight (should be exactly 31.1g)
  • 🚨Wrong diameter (should be 40mm) or thickness (should be 3mm)
  • 🚨Dull thud instead of clear, sustained bell-like ring
  • 🚨Magnetic attraction (genuine .999 silver is not magnetic)
Tip: Sophisticated counterfeits can fool visual inspection alone. Always use the acoustic verifier above alongside precise weight and dimension measurements.

About the Libertad

First minted in 1982, the Silver Libertad is produced by Casa de Moneda de México, the oldest mint in the Americas (founded 1535). The coin features the Angel of Independence (Winged Victory) on the obverse and the Mexican coat of arms surrounded by historical eagle designs on the reverse. Libertads are known for relatively low mintages compared to other major bullion coins, making them popular with collectors.
