How to Spot a Fake Libertad

Counterfeit 1/2 oz Gold Mexican Libertad coins are increasingly common. Use the acoustic verifier above as your first line of defense, then check these key red flags:

  • 🚨Incorrect weight (should be exactly 15.55g)
  • 🚨Wrong diameter (should be 29mm) or thickness (should be 1.75mm)
  • 🚨Flat or muted ping sound instead of clear ring
  • 🚨Magnetic attraction (genuine gold libertads are not magnetic)
Tip: Sophisticated counterfeits can fool visual inspection alone. Always use the acoustic verifier above alongside precise weight and dimension measurements.

About the Libertad

The Gold Libertad series has been produced by Casa de Moneda de México since 1981 in various sizes. The 1/2 oz version features the same iconic Angel of Independence design as the full ounce coin. Earlier gold Libertads (pre-1991) were struck in .900 fine gold, giving them a distinctive warm color from the copper alloy content. Gold Libertads are known for very low mintages, making them among the scarcest gold bullion coins.
